Zac Efron adopts Drake’s ‘YOLO’ motto, as does Souljaboy

You may only live once, but Drake's motto is taking on a life of its own.

During a press conference in Tokyo yesterday for his latest film, "New Year's Eve," Zac Efron got the media buzzing by flashing a new tattoo of the word "YOLO" on the side of his right hand. The mysterious phrase actually stands for "You Only Live Once."

Though Efron has not revealed his inspiration for the tat, the acronym entered mainstream pop culture earlier this year when Drake released his song "The Motto (YOLO)" featuring Lil Wayne, from his new album, "Take Care."

"You only live once: That's the motto n***a, YOLO," Drake sings during the chorus.

The Canadian rapper appeared to first use the catch phrase while celebrating his birthday in Las Vegas two months ago. On October 23 (two days before he turned 25), Drake posted a self-portrait on Twitter, in which he looked out of his hotel room onto the strip, with the words, "You only live once ... YOLO."

Then, in November, Drake announced he would release a joint mix tape with Rick Ross called "Y.O.L.O." "I've been working on that for the last couple of weeks," he said in a statement. "We haven't really connected because he's been going through this thing with his health. I've been stashing my little beats and verses."

That same day, Drake's new single, "Lord Knows," was "leaked" (it's since been removed), featuring Ross singing, "You know I love this/YOLO, you only live once."

Though the acronym appeared in the Urban Dictionary back in 2004, Drake seems to have breathed new life into the saying, with other high-profile celebs like Efron and American rapper Souljaboy freely adopting it soon after he did.

"In cali with @KWONY_CASH_SOD gettin stoopid fresh for the shoot 2nite #FAN #SODMG #YOLO" Souljaboy tweeted on December 10.

Maybe they'll thank Drake later.
