Joan Rivers in hot water over Adele fat jokes

They just keep on coming, don’t they? Joan Rivers is the latest celebrity to spark an angry backlash over fat jokes about the award-winning singer Adele.

While appearing on the “Late Show with David Letterman” this week, the 79-year-old comedian discussed her time at this year’s Oscars by pointing out two “disappointments.” One was that Brad Pitt didn’t show up even though Rivers was told he would be sitting next to her. “And I really thought [he would be], since there was a booster seat,” she quipped.

The other was meeting Adele, to which Letterman naturally replied “Oh, yeah, lovely woman.” In response, Rivers puffed out her cheeks and held out her arms in a gesture referencing to the 24-year-old soul singer’s body type.

“Can we just talk to each other here?” Rivers asked when the studio audience reacted with a shocked groan.

The comedian continued to roast Adele, who won an Oscar Sunday night for Best Original Score for “Skyfall.”

“What is her song, ‘Rolling in the Deep’?" Rivers went on. "She should add 'fried chicken.'”

Unsurprisingly, Adele's fans turned the tables by insulting Rivers’s appearance on Twitter.

“Pretty rich Joan Rivers is attacking Adele based on appearance when she looks like she could star in the sequel to The Walking Dead,” wrote @AhmedKheir6.

“Joan Rivers should not be making fun of Adele's weight. Adele can fix her weight but Rivers is stuck with a permanent, frozen fake smile,” wrote @ItsTheTruthLove.

But this isn’t altogether new territory for Rivers, who is known for her shock humour. Earlier this week, Rivers tweeted, “On Sunday night, you could easily pick Adele's Oscar statuette out of a lineup. It was the only one wearing Spanx.”

She’s also refusing to apologize for a joke made about German model Heidi Klum’s outfit at a party recently. “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens,” she said.

In fact, Rivers' comments aren't even the first offensive comments aimed at Adele this week. At Sunday's Oscars, host Seth MacFarlane made a joke at Adele's expense: “Rex Reed will be out here to review Adele’s performance of 'Skyfall,’" he said, referencing the now-infamous movie critic's review of the “Identity Thief,” in which he called Melissa McCarthy a “female hippo.”

And though he plays the innocent host, Letterman has also known to make more than a few cracks about a female celebrity’s weight. In 2011, actress and former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Kirstie Alley called him out on every single fat joke he made about her.

After skewering Adele, Rivers moved on to Anne Hathaway as her next target (also bringing up her eating habits, making fun of her binging on “a baked potato and a tomato” after wrapping “Les Miserables”). But Hathaway, Rivers insisted, was “very, very, very talented.”
