Long-standing rumours about Hugh Jackman's sexuality are suddenly making the Aussie actor's wife miserable.
In a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the 44-year-old "Les Misérables" star reveals that Deborra-Lee Furness is having a harder time shaking off the gay gossip about her husband, whom she married in 1996 and with whom she has two kids.
"Just recently, it bugs her," Jackman said.
As recently as 2011, it seems that Furness could shrug off those rumours.
"Hugh and I don't pay much heed," she told the New York Post. "It's kind of tragic that these people have nothing better to do than to gossip about people they don't know."
Jackman blames his wife's change of heart on the Internet, which she reportedly uses more than he does (he goes on it only for cricket stats and to read the Economist).
"She goes: 'It's big. It's everywhere!' " he told THR.
People's Sexiest Man Alive of 2008 has said that his wife has stood up for him in the past in the face of those rumours. In a 2008 interview with the magazine, he identified the three main rumours about himself as "Gay, gay, and gay," and said that his 57-year-old partner sometimes even responds to strangers on the subject.
"When I played [flamboyant Australian entertainer] Peter Allen [on Broadway in "The Boy from Oz"], Deb saw the show about 50 times," Jackman said. "She said the most infuriating times would be in the bathroom because all she'd hear is, 'Is he or isn't he gay?' ... 'I don't know, he's married.' ... 'Oh, who cares? I'm sure he's gay.' ... And she used to call out from the stall, 'He's not gay! I'm telling you he's not!' And there would be silence until someone said, 'I think that's his wife!'"
We can only hope that Jackman wins the Academy Award for his performance in "Les Misérables." At least then, gossipmongers will have something true to talk about.
