The stars were out on Monday night, walking the red carpet at the Berlin Film Festival, including "Before Midnight" stars Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. However, there was one distraction that ended up overshadowing the beauty of these two stars: Hawke’s new '90s bleached-blond hairstyle.

The 42-year-old actor is currently returning to theatre in the Off-Broadway play “Clive,” which he directs as well as stars in. In it, Hawke plays an aging rocker in the 1990s in search of a comeback -- and he’s got the hair to prove it. The rock ’n’ roll look worked for Hawke when he attended the play’s opening night party last week -- with his heavy eyeliner and an all-black outfit, Hawke drew comparisons to David Bowie, Billy Idol, and Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath.
Out of that context, though, it’s a 911 call to Hollywood’s fashion police.
Hawke did his best to subdue the shocking dye job at the Berlin Film Festival, combing it back instead of spiking it up as he does in the play. Beside 43-year-old Delpy’s classy all-black attire, Hawke greeted the press in a shiny blue suit and a couple of long necklaces and almost pulls off the look.

Luckily for moviegoers, this is a very new look for Hawke, so it won’t be making an appearance in “Before Midnight,” the latest in a romance trilogy between Hawke, Delpy, and director Richard Linklater. In the meantime, “Clive” is set to close on March 9, so there is a short lifespan for the bleached locks -- unless Hawke gets really into his character and decides to leave acting for a rock career. But let’s be honest: We’d still go see him in concert.
