Eli Manning inadvertently slams James Van Der Beek

Talk about a fumble! Eli Manning isn't known for being mean, so we are going to chalk up the football star's recent slamming of James Van Der Beek to simply another awkward interview.

The New York Giants quarterback inadvertently dissed the "Dawson's Creek" star while he was answering questions about the upcoming Super Bowl, which takes place this Sunday and pits Manning's team against the New England Patriots.

The 31-year-old player was asked by Access Hollywood who he thought should play him in a movie about his life. "All those actors are too good-looking to portray me," he said, adding that he was more concerned with "throwing motion" than with looks.

But that didn't stop Manning from suggesting an actor he apparently thought wasn't overly handsome.

"James Van Der Beek has played a quarterback and he looks like a pretty tall guy, and that's important," Manning concluded.

Poor Van Der Beek. The 34-year-old actor starred in the hit film "Varsity Blues" back in 1999 as an academically gifted backup high school quarterback, and he hasn't been able to score another major movie role since. And now this? In Van Der Beek's defence, though, he'll soon star as an exaggerated version of himself on the upcoming ABC sitcom "Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23."

Too bad the Giants aren't playing the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The team that once belonged to Van Der Beek's favourite player could have gotten him some payback.
