Beyonce is as famous for her work ethic as she is for attitude, choreography, and epic hair. And now it seems motherhood will get the same commitment and flair.

In a new profile from GQ magazine, accompanied by a super sexy Terry Richardson shoot (which caused a major stir on the Internet Wednesday), Mrs. Jay-Z says that, before having one-year-old Blue Ivy, being onstage was the closest she came to free.

“I love my job, but it’s more than that: I need it,” she tells the mag. “Because before I gave birth, it was the only time in my life, all throughout my life, that I was lost.”

By “lost” the 31-year-old singer means disconnected from the pangs of the road to superstardom: incessant rehearsal, sacrificing her youth, and overcoming the shy schoolgirl from Houston, Texas, to become Sasha Fierce.

“I have very, very early‑on memories of her rehearsing on her own in her room,” Bey’s sister, Solange, tells GQ. I specifically remember her taking a line out of a song or a routine and just doing it over and over and over again until it was perfect and it was strong.”

Solange continues, “At age 10, when everybody else was ready to say, ‘Okay, I’m tired, let’s take a break,’ she wanted to continue – to ace it and overcome it.”

“It’s like a blackout. When I’m onstage, I don’t know what the crap happens. I am gone,” Beyonce says of performing – and, now, taking care of music’s First Daughter.

Be prepared to get gone with Beyonce come Super Bowl 2013, on February 3, when she’ll play the Pepsi half time show.

“One of the reasons I connect to the Super Bowl is that I approach my shows like an athlete,” she adds. “You know how they sit down and watch whoever they’re going to play and study themselves?”

In the case of the sports event, the biggest televised event of the year, it would serve Beyonce well to lose – herself, anyway.
