Betty White is not your average nonagenarian! The actress, who turned 90 in January, now has two primetime TV shows on the air — her hidden-camera series "Off Their Rockers" airs tonight on NBC — and she's joined the Twitterverse.
"Hello Twitter! And they said it would never happen. Oh wait, that was me," White, whose handle is @BettyMWhite, posted on the social media site Tuesday. The actress, who also stars in the TV Land sitcom "Hot in Cleveland," then got a little flirty in another tweet to "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest: "Hey @RyanSeacrest — my new show airs tomorrow and I hear we're in the same time slot. I've always dreamed of sharing a night with you…"
In less than 24 hours, White has amassed over 150,000 followers. As for who she follows, it's a list of just over 40 people, ranging from President Obama to Selena Gomez. Other celebrity tweeters flooded her with welcome messages, like Alyssa Milano's 140-character-or-less greeting: "BIG twitterverse WELCOME Betty!!!!"
White's background photo is pretty great, too — she's seen getting a tattoo of a rocking chair.
The former "Golden Girls" star's foray into the world of social media comes as a surprise because just last year she said she didn't own a computer — and she still may not. At the Television Critics Association press tour in 2011, White was asked if she was on Facebook and she said she wasn't. "I didn't know what Facebook was," she told reporters. "I still don't. I'm sorry. I don't have a computer because I get a lot of mail, but I can stack those in stacks and throw this stack out without answering and then I get to this stack. But if I punched the button and stored something in a computer, I wouldn't sleep at night wondering what was stored there. I'm a technological spaz."
So unless she became a computer pro in one year, which seems unlikely, it sounds like White is probably getting some assistance in posting her messages on Twitter. But, hey, isn't that what celebrity handlers are for?
