Kim Cattrall: ‘I’ve been on a diet since 1974’

Actress Kim Cattrall, best known for playing the iconic Samantha Jones on “Sex and the City” as well as for her highly accomplished theatre career, recently revealed that her lifelong regime of exercise and healthy eating is the only way she has been able to play the blonde bombshell into her mid-50s.

“When I hit my forties I thought, ‘I can't play a sexy siren any more.’ Almost 20 years later, it's still going on,” she recently told Woman and Home magazine. “I think that's because I take care of myself, which includes dieting, exercising and minimizing stress.”

Today, it’s hard to imagine 56-year-old Cattrall, who was born in Liverpool but raised in Courtenay, B.C., playing anything but a powerful, sexy vixen on the stage and screen. But hey, we can’t say she didn’t work hard and earn her sex appeal.

“I joke that I've been on a diet since 1974, which is basically true. I like to eat, and my body type is not naturally this thin, especially at this age,” she said.

It’s not the first time she’s commented on maintaining a small waist and a large appetite. While acting as a spokesperson for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, Cattrall previously told Shape magazine, “I come from British stock, with lots of meat and potatoes, and I have my dad's appetite. I'm a sensualist who loves taste and flavor.”

She added: “I like to prepare my own food when I'm dieting. Dieting is about controlling what you eat, but within that control you can luxuriate in the ingredients that do taste good and are well-made, whether it's chicken or vegetables or fruits.”

Though Cattrall is a great advocate for healthy eating and exercise, she still gives in to cravings every once in a while. Just watch her Twitter feed – ice cream, bread pudding, crawfish, greasy brunch, and burgers are all on her mind!

Cattrall is currently starring in Tennessee Williams’s “Sweet Bird of Youth” in London, and will soon produce and star in a new Canadian TV series “Sensitive Skin” (adapted from the British series of the same name), costarring Canadian actor Don McKellar.
