2012 has been a big year for some of our favourite homegrown celebrities, taking them away from their home and native land to far-flung and exotic destinations around the world. Following that trend, some famous Canadians went abroad to ring in 2013.

Justin Bieber: Having grown up in Ontario, Justin Bieber certainly wasn't deterred by an outdoor performance during New York City's celebrations at Times Square. In fact, at one point he seemed to be a little too warm and decided to air out his chest for thousands of screaming fans. Then, he toned it down with an acoustic performance of his 2012 hit "Boyfriend" for ABC's "New Year's Rockin' Eve." But it wasn't all work for the 18-year-old "Believe" singer; he still made time to ring in the new year with girlfriend Selena Gomez in sunny Mexico and on a ski trip with friends Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

Ryan Gosling: Canada's hottest expat certainly kept a low profile this New Year's Eve, he didn't even make it out for a 2013 morning run with his gal pal, Eva Mendes. In fact, it's not even clear if they spent the last night of 2012 together, which is understandable since their hectic work schedules have kept them apart a lot recently. Nevertheless, the couple, who met while filming the thriller "Palace Beyond the Pines," got to spend some time together in December when Gosling was back in town after filming an untitled Terrence Malick film with Rooney Mara and Natalie Portman in Mexico and Texas. And even if they did spend New Year's Eve in different cities or even countries, at least Mendes had her dog Hugo and Gosling's dog George to keep her company.

Nina Dobrev: This young Toronto native and star of "The Vampire Diaries"  began 2013 earlier than the rest of us, since she celebrated the new year on the other side of the world in Thailand! Along with her boyfriend and "Vampire Diaries" costar Ian Somerhalder, she first traveled to China shortly after Christmas, where they posed for pictures and greeted fans upon arriving at the airport in Shanghai. Later, they moved on to Thailand. Before a new year began, Dobrev also made an exciting announcement. "I'm getting married!!!!!!!!" she wrote on Twitter, and attached a photo of herself cuddling with a tiger cub and feeding it milk from a bottle.

Carly Rae Jepsen: Canada's favourite songstress from Mission, B.C. probably (maybe?) spent New Year's Eve receiving phone call after phone call filled with good wishes. That is, when she wasn't performing at Times Square in New York. While Bieber might have showed off his bod at the performance, Jepsen decided to stay toasty and used a time-honoured Canadian tip to keep warm - she had long johns under her skirt.

Drake: Drake, aka Aubrey Graham, left the cold Canadian winter behind to begin 2013 in a much warmer climate - Miami, Florida. Called his "home away from home," Drake gave Miami one of the city's biggest New Year's Eve parties at the Fountainebleau club. He even had T.I., French Montana, and Busta Rhymes on hand to help keep the crowd energized through midnight and beyond. Not present at the party was Drake's former flame Rihanna, who seems to have spent the first morning of 2013 with her controversial on-again-off-again boyfriend, Chris Brown.

They might not have been at home, but hopefully this year, we'll be seeing more of these stars on home turf!
