Does cutting off your hair mean you're crazy?

It's no secret that in Hollywood, you are what you look like. Celebrities rely on their bodies, skin, face, and clothes in order to be recognizable and desirable to their fans. That's why we freak out so much when one of them drastically changes their look. Especially, it seems, when it comes to their hair.

Miley Cyrus is the latest to chop off her locks, sending blogosphere and the Twitterverse into a frizzy tizzy. Looking through Cyrus' Twitter feed, she seems pretty excited about the new 'do ("feeling so happy in my skin," she wrote, along with several posts of cute photos of herself looking downright blissful), even though there's evidence that not all of her fans are pleased with the cut.

It's unfortunate, but every time a young celebrity does something sudden to their hair, we immediately think of Britney Spears' ill-fated date with a pair of clippers in 2007. At the time, the singer had left rehab after less than one day of treatment, and had also recently filed for divorce from K-Fed. The buzz cut was a huge leap into the downward spiral of both her career and personal life — which only now seem to be back on track, five and a half years later.

We're not saying that Miley Cyrus is on the Spears track to train wreckage, but she's no stranger to scandal, either. When once she was rumoured to be plagued with drug addictions and eating disorders, the 19-year-old now she says she's eager to settle down and have babies with fiancé Liam Hemsworth. A fellow female pop star in showbiz at an extremely early age, the similarities between Cyrus and Spears are hard to ignore.

Of course, not every female celeb who goes pixie is on the verge of a breakdown. Natalie Portman famously cut her hair for the film "V for Vendetta," and it only proved how confident and drop-dead gorgeous she really is. Male fans wanted her, female fans admired her, and she's still one of Hollywood's sexiest women (though, sorry fellas, now off the market!).

Anne Hathaway, though, wasn't so lucky. When she cut off her hair for her role in "Les Miserables," she was admittedly inconsolably sobbing as her locks fell, and still neither she nor her fiancé are very excited about it now. But we think it's safe to say that her career is still as strong as ever.

Cutting off her hair was an act of independence for Emma Watson, when she finished filming the "Harry Potter" movies. Like Portman, fans and colleagues saw her as a mature and beautiful woman, not a lunatic.

So, Miley cut her hair. Maybe she's losing it, but probably not. She's no Samson, and her hair doesn't secretly contain her strength, talent, or sense of mind. Which now leaves us with only one question: What's the number for her hairdresser, and does he have an opening this week?
