Elizabeth Banks angers mothers of ‘only’ children

Elizabeth Banks can handle "The Hunger Games" - but can she endure the wrath of angry mommy bloggers?

In a recent interview with People magazine, Banks revealed her thoughts on being a mom of two. The actress and her husband Max Handelman used a surrogate to have sons Felix in March 2011 and Magnus Mitchell this past November.

"Two is very different from one. When you have one kid, you feel like you can jet set around and you can throw him on the hip and you get your life done," she said. "You don’t realize how easy one is until you have two. Now I’m really a mom. Oh, I am a mom now! This is for serious — I am responsible for two people now."

Maybe Banks was feeling exhausted at the time and wasn't able to choose her words more wisely, because now she's hearing from legions of women angry over her apparent categorization of moms that are real and moms that aren't.

"And before she was really a mom, she was what exactly to her son? A nanny? A partial mom? A ... WHAT?!" wrote Julie Ryan Evans on the popular Mommy Blog, The Stir. "It's so rude and so insulting to parents of only children. Whether she meant it that way or not, it's incredibly insensitive."

Luckily, Banks is not the only celebrity mom to cause a ruckus with mothers across the United States and Canada, even if she did so accidentally. Other mothers have been much more obvious in their rebel-rousing parenting style.

Alicia Silverstone became mom-of-the-moment last March when she posted a video showing her chewing food and then feeding it to her baby straight from her mouth. The controversial feeding method raised health concerns as well as the contents in our stomachs.

A few months later, former "Blossom" star, current "Big Bang Theory" actress, and author of the parenting book "Beyond the Sling," Mayim Bialik defended attachment parenting, and breastfeeding into toddler-dom in particular. "My little guy is still in the threes and he still will breastfeed on occasion. I don't nurse him in public and there are a lot of boundaries and rules around it," she said. "There's still tremendous developmental and psychological bonding that occurs through breast feeding... He's on the path to weaning, all children wean. I want him to be independent."

In 2008, moms Amanda Peet and Jenny McCarthy went head-to-head in a debate over vaccines for children. Peet infamously called parents who don't vaccinate their kids "parasites," and McCarthy has been very outspoken against vaccines, linking them to autism (which her son Evan has). McCarthy also raised eyebrows when she said that children can "recover" from autism.

And it's not only moms who can start a fuss. When it comes to circumcision, don't get daddy Russell Crowe started. He once tweeted in 2011 that "Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature?" and responded to the following negative reaction with "I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats, but stop cutting your babies."

Of course, these examples don't hold a candle to the real mothers of controversy - Kate Gosselin from "Jon and Kate Plus Eight," Octomom Nadya Suleman, Kardashian mother-hen Kris Jenner, and Dina Lohan. Their parenting legacies are far too extensive to cover in one blog post.
