  • The problem with People's 'Most Beautiful' list

Lupita Nyong'o has been named People's Most Beautiful of 2014.

"It was exciting and just a major, major compliment," the Nyong'o said of her cover. "I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [it] and feel a little more seen."

(People)While the Most Beautiful title is a major honour for any celebrity -- Nyong'o becomes only the fourth woman of colour to claim the cover since the first issue hit shelves in 1990.

The 2014 list did also include Indian actress Mindy Kaling and African American actresses Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington, but People's annual issue does not have a particularly strong history of diversity.

The first woman of colour to appear on the cover was Halle Berry in 2003, who at the time was also the first African American actress to win a lead Oscar, which she won for "Monster's Ball." "My mom always said, 'Beauty is what you do,' " she told People at the time.

Berry was followed by Jennifer Lopez in 2011 and Beyonce in 2012, who graced the cover shortly after

  • 5 reasons why people are annoyed by Avril Lavigne’s ‘Hello Kitty’

Update: The "Hello Kitty" video has been removed from the web.

Avril Lavigne just dropped her "Hello Kitty" music video, and no one is yelling "arigato!" or "kawaii!" in response. In the video, the Canadian pop star repeatedly shouts the Japanese words for "thanks" and "cute" while surrounded by pink cupcakes, rainbow candy, and bored-looking Japanese back-up dancers.

“I love Hello Kitty. I have an obsession, so I wrote a song called ‘Hello Kitty.’ It’s really fun, it’s about a slumber party and loving the kitty," Lavigne told Yahoo about the song in June. “It has an electronic vibe, which is very different for me, and it’s the first time I’ve experimented in that whole world.”

But maybe she shouldn't have, as critics were quick to slam the song and the video almost immediately upon its release. Here are the top five reasons people are plugging their ears and eyes when faced with "Hello Kitty":

    1) The appropriation of Japanese culture

  • Canadian magician Darcy Oake may have impressed the "Britain's Got Talent" judges last Saturday, but unless he can conjure up a U.K. passport, he may have trouble charming the rest of the country.

According to the Daily Star, viewers are already complaining that half the performers on the ITV show come from outside of Britain. Oake is no exception, travelling all the way from Winnipeg, Man., just to perform on the show's London stage.

Reddit user toggafhholley dubbed the competition series "Britain imports talent," while British TV personality Katie Hopkins specifically targeted Oake with her criticism:

The spokesman for "Britain's Got Talent" replied by telling the Daily Star, “Anyone can apply, irrespective of their past experience."

Back in April, judge Simon Cowell, who called Oake the "best magician"

  • Brian Williams ‘raps’ to Snoop Dogg’s ‘Gin and Juice’ on ‘The Tonight Show’

Rapping has changed Brian Williams's life, even though he's never actually done it. On Monday night, "The Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon introduced the seventh rap mashup of the NBC Nightly News anchor, in which footage of Williams's news reports is spliced together to show Williams rapping lyrics to Snoop Dogg's famous song "Gin and Juice."

Unsurprisingly, Williams's rendition of this hit has already gone viral with more than 200,000 views. And the 54-year-old newsman appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" to talk about his famous raps.

"People think I have somehow colluded into the making of these videos," Williams said, adding, "It's all anyone mentions to me anymore. It's unbelievable."

According to Williams, actor Cuba Gooding Jr. came up to him during a hockey game on Thursday and said he was "a huge figure in the rap and hip-hop community." And then Williams proved it by asking if Fallon could create some mashups with Foxy Brown and Ludacris.

  • Kirsten Dunst says actresses ‘court’ the casting couch

In an April 17 interview with W magazine, Kirsten Dunst raised eyebrows with her opinion about the infamous Hollywood "casting couch."

In a chat with filmmaker Sofia Coppola, the "Melancholia" star laughed at the prospect of being on Hollywood's infamous casting couch, referring to situations in which actresses are encouraged to trade sexual favors for roles.

"I don’t give off that vibe," Dunst said in the interview. "I think that you court that stuff, and to me it’s crossing a boundary that would hinder the trust in your working relationship."

But a number of actresses have previously spoken out about their casting couch experiences, which actually did not involve any "courting," as Dunst might say.

In 2013, British actress Thandie Newton recalled to CNN a "horrific incident" in which a casting director exploited her when she was a teenager. The 41-year-old actress said that during the audition, the camera was surreptitiously positioned in a way that it was able to film up her

  • Darcy Oake wows 'Britain's Got Talent' judges with magic

Canadian magician Darcy Oake wowed the judges on "Britain's Got Talent" over the weekend with his unbelievable magic act. And now we know he comes by his showmanship honestly -- he's the son of "Hockey Night in Canada" host Scott Oake.

The 26-year-old Winnipeg native, who specializes in slight of hand and illusions, flew from Canada to the U.K. specifically to appear on "Britain's Got Talent." He said he chose the British competition series because he wanted to "be performing on a global scale."

"When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams of becoming a doctor," Darcy told the audience, "but my parents insisted that I become a magician."

It looks like they made the savvy choice. Darcy's act has gone viral, reportedly earning more than 1 million views in one day. And for good reason! On stage he turned various inanimate objects (a flame, a handkerchief, a feather) into four doves, all of which he ultimately turned into a woman, as the judges stared in awe.

  • 6 reasons why CBS would be stupid to fire Craig Ferguson

    Craig Ferguson (CBS)

Even after Stephen Colbert was handed David Letterman's seat, the revolving door of CBS's late night lineup continues to spin, with rumours that Chelsea Handler may take over Craig Ferguson's "Late Late Show" spot.

In March, the "Chelsea Lately" host announced she was leaving E! when her contract is up at the end of the year — and this week, the Wrap confirmed that Handler was meeting with CBS.

CBS and Handler's manager denied that she would take over "The Late Late Show," claiming the comedian was in talks over a syndication deal. But CBS chief Les Moonves recently confirmed to Deadline that the network was "having conversations" with Ferguson regarding his contract, which also ends this year. According to the publication, the late night host's ratings are not up to snuff.

But who cares about ratings when you've got Ferguson in the room? The 51-year-old Scottish import has been charming late night audiences since he started hosting the "Late Late Show" in 2005. So just in case CBS

  • Emma Stone seriously can't stop fangirling over the Spice Girls

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is set for release on May 2, but you wouldn't know it by watching star Emma Stone's appearances lately. Instead of drumming up buzz for the big superhero sequel, the actress has been spending most of her time talking about her love of the Spice Girls.

It began in March, when Stone cried while watching a video message from Spice Girls member Mel B (see the video above).

Other media outlets soon followed suit, with a London radio show setting up a Skype call between Stone and Mel C.

Then the actress showed off her talent for forging all five of the Spice Girls' autographs on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

By the time Stone appeared on the U.K.'s "The Graham Norton Show," even she realized that her love of the girl band had begun to eclipse her new movie.

"I was a fiend, I was obsessed with the Spice Girls," Stone said, "I just feel like I've been talking more about the Spice Girls on this press tour than I have about the movie."

But is it any wonder that we'd rather

  • Drake Bell’s feud with Justin Bieber is more of a one-sided spat

Drake Bell has been pretty vocal about his dislike of Justin Bieber, but at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards, the former Nickelodeon star told Celebuzz that he has "nothing against" the pop star. That's despite the fact that Bell has been publicly attacking Bieber for the last two years, most recently in an Instagram video filmed with Aaron Carter.

Framed as a "feud" by the press, a closer look reveals the rift to be a one-sided fight started by Bell in 2012, which Bieber has only once responded to.

It all started when the 27-year-old "Drake & Josh" alum's Twitter account was allegedly hacked and insulting messages were sent from it about Katy Perry. Bell later tweeted an apology:

He then followed this up with an unprovoked attack on the Biebs' guitar skills — which, of course, got Beliebers irate.

  • JWoww isn’t the only celebrity who hates being pregnant

In Hollywood, actresses frequently make pregnancy sound like winning an Oscar. Drew Barrymore said she felt "blessed," Jennifer Love Hewitt branded it "awesome," and Angelina Jolie opted for "special" to describe her growing baby bump.

So when Jenni "JWoww" Farley revealed at the MTV Movie Awards that she hated being pregnant, it came as a bit of a shock, especially considering that she was standing next to former "Jersey Shore" co-star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, who is taking the more traditional stance of enjoying her second pregnancy.

"She loves being pregnant right now, and I f---ing hate it," JWoww told Us Weekly at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. "I'm not a fan of pregnancy right now, with my thighs touching and my boobs changing. But I know it will be worth it and hopefully I get back to that really quickly."

The 28-year-old reality star, who is expecting her first child with her fiancé, Roger Mathews, is set to give birth in July.

"I know she is going to be a great mom," Snooki
