Could One Direction be left directionless without one of its key members? On Wednesday the British boy band revealed that Zayn Malik had left the group after five years, and resounding sobs were heard from Directioners worldwide.

"Niall [Horan], Harry [Styles], Liam [Payne], and Louis [Tomlinson] will continue as a four-piece and look forward to the forthcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, due to be released later this year," their Facebook message read.

In an accompanying statement, Malik himself revealed why he had quit. “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight,” he wrote.

So will the band be as strong without Malik by their side? We look back at the big boy band breakups of the past and, to be honest, it could go either way:

  • Angelina Jolie and other stars open up about health struggles

Angelina Jolie has penned another op-ed about her health, this time to announce she has had her ovaries removed.

Two years ago, the 39-year-old “Unbroken” filmmaker famously penned an op-ed in The New York Times about having a double mastectomy after being told she had a gene that increased her risk of breast cancer. In that article she said the gene also increased her risk of ovarian cancer, but that she’d deal with that later.

On Tuesday she wrote another NYT op-ed announcing she had had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed after doctors detected possible signs of early cancer. She is now undergoing early menopause.

"I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, ‘Mom died of ovarian cancer,’" Jolie wrote, adding, "I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life."

  • Dustin Hoffman plays hide-and-seek with the paparazzi

If you can’t beat the paparazzi…pose for them?

Dustin Hoffman played hide-and-seek with the paps this weekend. The 77-year-old “Cobbler” star hid behind a wall, a tree, a poll and a plant during a stroll in Los Angeles on Sunday:

Hoffman is so well known for his antics with celebrity snappers that in January BuzzFeed published an ode to his “Long And Intriguing History Of Hiding From The Paparazzi.” The slew of images had the Oscar-winner ducking behind mail boxes, newspaper boxes and gates.

But don’t let his playful demeanor fool you, Hoffman is no fan of celebrity photographers. “The whole paparazzi thing has really cut down the ability to feel free and spontaneous,” he told The Independent in 2009. “For all of us, its going to get worse and worse.”

Perhaps, but when it comes to this actor’s method of evading the paps, it only gets better and better.

  • Five things to know about Ashley Moore, Justin Bieber’s maybe girlfriend

Justin Bieber appears to have a new leading lady! The 21-year-old “Boyfriend” singer was snapped cozying up to Nous model Ashley Moore — kissing her forehead, sitting in her lap — on Friday at a Los Angeles Clippers game.

But are they just friends? The duo was first seen having lunch in 2013, at the time Moore was dating the Biebs’ best friend Lil Twist, and last July Bieber posted a photo of Moore’s new modelling campaign on Instagram with the message, “Ash I see u in ur #Calvin’s.”

Before that, in April 2014, the Ontario native posted another photo of Moore with the caption, “super cute @ashley_more_ Proud of you :)” Which definitely had the ring of friendship rather than romance.

But five months ago Moore suggested she may have broken up with Lil Twist when she posted an Instagram image of herself with diamond tears and the caption, “He and I; had something beautiful But so dysfunctional it couldn’t last.”

So has she moved on to his best bud? Either way, here are five things you

  • Why Gwyneth Paltrow is not ‘close to the common woman’

    Jerome Favre/Getty ImagesJerome Favre/Getty Images
Gwyneth Paltrow thinks she's common. In a new interview with CNN, the "Iron Man" star and Goop founder suggested that being a multimillionaire did not preclude her from empathizing with you and I.

"I'm incredibly close to the common woman in that I'm a woman and I'm a mother and we all are in a physical body with beating hearts with compassion and love, we are all seekers, we all want fulfillment, we all want to live our best lives, we all want to be healthy and happy and squeeze the most we can out of life," she said. "I think that's all women."

Aside from the most basic biological similarities, Paltrow is not like us. Let me count the ways:

    Her Bank Acount
According to Forbes, last year alone Paltrow brought home a whopping $19 million. Though she is focusing primarily on promoting her Goop newsletter these days, it is her film career that really gets her the big bucks, not to mention brand endorsements like Hugo Boss. In total, she is reportedly worth -- drumroll, please -- $140

  • Madonna’s dream date is...Drake?!

    Getty ImagesGetty Images
Madonna really wants to run through the 6 with Drake. The Queen of Pop has revealed in a new interview that, despite her storied love life, there is one thing she has yet to do -- go out with Drizzy.

“The lifelong ambition I still want to fulfill is to go on a dream date with Drake – and only kiss him,” she recently told Us Weekly. (via Page Six).

A week ago, Madonna teased the Toronto rapper on Instagram with a photo of herself on a bus shelter and the caption, "Im still waiting for my ride!! Do i have to take a bus? @champagnepapi #bitchiwannabebigasmadonna"

The 56-year-old "Living for Love" singer's comment was in reference to the flirty exchange the duo shared around the time Drake released the single "Madonna" from his fourth album, If You're Reading This It's Too Late.

On Jan. 31, Drake posted a black and white photo of Madonna on Instagram with the caption, "I wanna ride with you."

In response, Madge reportedly asked, “Where to?” This triggered Drake to post another black and

  • Canadian ‘90s bands: then and now

Ooh, it's kinda crazy. Last night’s Juno Awards could have just as easily happened in the ’90s, what with the presence of Alanis Morissette and SoulDecision band member Trevor Guthrie.

Bleached hair, be gone! That got us thinking: where have other Canadian bands of yesteryear ended up? Here’s a look back at the top five bands you may have forgotten but will jog your memory as soon as you hear them:

This Vancouver boy band may be confused with 'N Sync -- except they wrote their own music and played their own instruments. The trio — Trevor Guthrie, David Bowman and Ken Lewko — were active from 1993 to 2005 and their legacy is the 2000 hit “Faded,” from their debut album, “No One Does It Better.” The follow-up “Ooh It’s Kinda Crazy” also reached number one in Canada. They toured with Christina Aguilera and opened for 'N Sync. But before the release of their second album, “Shady Satin Drug,” Bowman left the band to start Steven Lies. Soon after Guthrie left to go solo.

  • Alanis Morissette's red carpet style evolution

Alanis Morissette was the talk of the Juno Awards last night in her plunging V-neck gown, which she wore for her return to the event's red carpet after more than a decade.

With her famous locks tied back and some very blingy earrings, the 40-year-old Ottawa native's style was a far cry from her signature look in the '90s (you could even call it "Ironic"). But it's a change that has been taking place over the past two decades.

Here's a look back at Morissette's style evolution on the red carpet, from "Head Over Feet" to "Edge of Evolution":

On the heels of her record-breaking "debut" (she released two Canadian albums before it), "Jagged Little Pill," Morissette appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards in traditional '90s grunge, complete with greasy hair.

Morissette cleaned up her look a little for the Grammy awards the next year, where she took home Album of the Year. She kept the clunky shoes, but traded in pants for a dress and spruced up her hair.

  • Anna Faris on the paparazzi: ‘Most of them are pretty nice guys’

Chalk it up to the fact that she has one of the Guardians of the Galaxy by her side, but Anna Faris doesn't really mind being followed by the paparazzi.

In a new interview with Health, the 38-year-old "Mom" star, who is married to Chris Pratt, is one of the few celebrities to confess she is OK with the paparazzi following her around.

"I don't know if my husband would necessarily agree, but most of them are pretty nice guys, just trying to make a living, and a lot of them are apologetic," she said, adding, "I think some celebrities are so mean to them and resent them so much. I mostly feel scared just going out without makeup on."

Faris is one of only a handful celebrities who doesn't seem to want to lash out at the paps. Surprisingly, Kanye West is another star who can live with them -- if he's in Paris. In 2013, he actually extended his hand to a photographer who was snapping him.

“I like how you guys, like, move out here. You’ve got like total respect for yourselves, have respect

  • Shania Twain wishes she never met ex-best friend Marie-Anne Thiebaud

Marie-Anne Thibeaud is still the one Shania Twain does not want in her life. On "Watch What Happens Live" on Wednesday, the Canadian singer confessed that she still feels sore about her former best friend having an affair with her ex-husband, Robert "Mutt" Lange.

Twain had been married to Lange for 15 years when they announced their separation following news that Thiebaud had been having a relationship with Lange in 2008. Twain and Lange divorced in 2010 and the Ontario-born musician subsequently wed Frederic Thiebaud -- the ex-husband of her ex-BFF.

When "WWHL" host Andy Cohen asked the 49-year-old singer what she would say if she met Marie-Anne face to face now, Twain said, “I’d say, ’I wish I’d never met you’.” Twain added that she did run into her former friend once but was lost for words. “You panic in those situations. I didn’t know what to do," she said.

Back in 2011, while Twain was promoting her autobiography, "From This Moment On," she told People further details about
