For Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake, it wasn't always riff-ridden love ballads and golf cart-stealing for when they were on "The Mickey Mouse Club" together in the early '90s. They also, it turns out, had a sideshow as pint-sized interrogators, as demonstrated in this vintage "MMC" clip that surfaced online this week:
For those who have trouble remembering people who were famous in the early '90s, Xscape was a popular hip hop group who broke onto the scene in 1992 with their debut their single "Just Kickin' It." But in this video, Gosling and Timberlake have other concerns for the band's members, LaTocha and Tamika Scott, Kandi Burruss, and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle.
"Me and Justin were wondering how you got the name for your band, Xscape," Ryan says, finger pointing dramatically.
"Yeah, I heard you got it because you guys were in this recording studio next to this burning oil refinery, and you guys escaped while these huge barrels of oil were exploding all around you! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!" Justin says, arms flailing.
Conversely, Ryan's version of events involves terrorists, secret agents, secret disguises, and riding horseback across the desert to safety. (In Xscape's defence, their reasons behind the name are much more inspiring to 'tweens.)
All in all, it's a hilariously badly-written and badly-acted sketch, which just makes it all the more endearing. Hey, international megastars were young once, too, and that includes Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake. No matter how often videos surface of baby Ryan Gosling on "Canada AM", singing "When a Man Love a Woman," or acting opposite Scott Speedman on "Goosebumps," it just never gets old.
